Phase 1 of the Great Horned Owl platform installation covers Carmel-by-the-Sea and parts of Carmel with six platforms installed on January 24th, 2026.

Subsequent platform deployments will extend to Carmel Knolls, Rancho Rio Vista, Carmel Views, Carmel Highlands, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, and Monterey. Carmel-by-the-Sea is now fully populated with owl platforms.

Great Horned Owl Territorial Boundaries

There are varying estimates of territorial boundaries for Great

Horned Owls which typically depend on the availability of food (rodents).

Due to the dense population of rats in/on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Owls aims for 1/2 mile platform spacing which is approximately 1 square mile of territory.

Ideally, there’s a need for a doctoral candidate of ornithology, or more specifically strigiology (a sub-discipline focusing on owls), to complete a thesis on this issue.
